IELTS Writing

IELTS Writing overview

Whether you are writing the Academic or the General Training test, when you come to the Writing section, you will find two different tasks. Task 1 of the Academic test requires you to write a short report whereas the General Training test-takers compose a letter of correspondence. The second task in both tests is an essay.

You must complete the two tasks in 60 minutes. Plan to spend more time on the essay as it carries twice the weight in your combined writing score and it also takes longer to write (250 words for the essay vs. 150 words for the report or letter).

Here is a more detailed explanation of the different tasks you will find on each test.
