IELTS on computer advantages

Published on November 12, 2018

There is some exciting news about the format of the IELTS test that will provide many advantages for test takers – a new computer-delivered format. This means that rather than using paper and a pencil to complete the test, the IELTS can now be done on a computer.

There are many advantages of this new format outlined below.

Increased number of test availability

Depending on your test centre, it is likely that there is more test availability, meaning more test dates and times. More test availability will provide more flexibility for test takers and could help with planning and for meeting deadlines for a variety of things, including submitting applications for work, school, immigration, and more. More information on the availability of the computer-delivered IELTS can be found here.

Faster results

Another advantage of the taking IELTS on computer is that test results will be available quicker compared to the paper-based test. With the computer-delivered IELTS, results will be available within 5-7 days after taking the test. Currently it takes 13 days to get results for the paper-based test.

No more messy writing

One concern we have heard from some who take the IELTS test is worrying about messy and hard-to- read handwriting. This will no longer be an issue with the computer-based tests. That may be a relief for many people!

It’s great to have choices in life, and IELTS is no exception. Even though the computer-based test is being rolled out, you can still choose to take the paper-based test or a computer-delivered one. For some, there may be a concern with their lack of familiarity with technology and computers. There may be concerns with typing ability or looking at a computer screen for an extended period of time. If any of these things concern you, not to worry, you have the choice.

Same IELTS test

Here’s another bit of good news: the computer-delivered test will be the same as the paper-based test. The only difference is that you use a computer for your test rather than using paper and a pencil!

Keep in mind that the Speaking test will continue to be done face-to-face with a certified IELTS examiner for the computer-delivered IELTS. We believe a face-to-face Speaking test is the most effective way of assessing your speaking skills and prompts a more lifelike performance. Don’t struggle to be heard above a noisy test room, at IELTS we hear you loud and clear the first time.

All the best for your test – however you choose to take it!
