Understanding your IELTS for UKVI score

Academic and General Training test results

IELTS scores are reported as band scores on a scale from 1 (the lowest) to 9 (the highest). You will be given a band score from 1 to 9 for each section of the test - Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. You will also be given an overall band score - which is the average of your four individual test section band scores.

Visit the About IELTS Scores page for more information on the band descriptors.

Life Skills test results

The IELTS Life Skills test is marked a little different. You will get one of two results:

  • Pass
  • Fail

A fail result means you have not been successful, and your test results cannot be used for your visa application.

Immigration and the law

Legislation about immigration in the UK changes frequently. It's important to check the UK Visa and Immigration website for changes that may apply to you. If you are interested in UK student visas, work visas, or looking for an indefinite leave to remain, you need to lodge an application with the UK Visa and Immigration Department. You may want to consider getting support from a lawyer or migration agent. You may also be able to get free advice for student visas
