IELTS Indicator follows the same content, format, structure and timing of an IELTS test.
The test is available for a limited time in certain countries where IELTS testing is currently suspended or limited due to COVID-19.

IELTS Indicator is only available as an Academic Test at the moment. IELTS Indicator has been designed to support students who want to progress their University and Educational Institution applications during the COVID-19 crisis. It has not been developed for migration purposes yet.
What accessibility features does IELTS Indicator provide?
The default, font sizes, line spacing and spacing between questions are designed to maintain readability of the information presented on the available screen space. IELTS Indicator also provides the option to enlarge the font size and change the colour settings to suit your needs.
What identity security standards will be in place for the IELTS Indicator?
Test takers will need to provide their passport and identity document details when booking an IELTS Indicator Test. Test takers will also be requested to show their passport and identity document during the Speaking Test which is conducted over a video call.
Is there a minimum age requirement for test takers to be able to take IELTS Indicator?
Yes. IELTS Indicator has been designed as a test for adults, and is not recommended for those under 18 years only. Those aged 15 or under cannot take IELTS Indicator. Those aged 16 or 17 years old must get a consent form signed by a parent/guardian and will also need to have a chaperone with them during their IELTS Indicator Speaking test.
Taking the IELTS Indicator Test
Will the test be timed?
The time window for the test will be strictly controlled, so each section will be time-bound. You need to complete the test in one sitting, so be sure you have availability for the full duration of the Listening, Reading and Writing sections – approximately 2 hours 45 minutes. You cannot pause the test and come back later. Your Speaking test will be conducted separately.

It will include one test for each section: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.
How is IELTS Indicator different from the IELTS Test?
IELTS Indicator is a session-based online IELTS Test that can be taken from home. The test is the same as IELTS in terms of content, format, structure and timing. Results are indicative as they may not be the same as what would be achieved in a high stakes, secure, test centre environment.
How is the IELTS Indicator Speaking Test different from the IELTS Speaking Test?
Both IELTS and IELTS Indicator have a one-to-one Speaking test with a qualified IELTS Examiner. IELTS Indicator uses a real time video communications tool to do this. By hosting the Speaking Test with a trained examiner, IELTS Indicator can focus on assessing a test takers real life conversational English skills, just like in the real world.
What should I have with me during the Speaking test?
For your Speaking test you will need to have your passport / identity document which you booked your IELTS Indicator test with, along with a paper and pen. You have to download Zoom video call application to your laptop or computer and ensure you have a web camera.
What if I don't have a web camera?
You need a working camera to be able to take the test.
What is the duration of the IELTS Indicator Test?
The duration of the IELTS Indicator Test is the same as that of the IELTS Test. The Listening Test runs for 30 minutes, followed by the Reading Test which takes 60 minutes. And then the Writing runs for 60 minutes, whereas the Speaking Test runs between 11 and 14 minutes. The Speaking test can be held either before or after the Listening, Reading and Writing Tests.
IELTS Indicator scores and results
How will I know if my university or college is happy to use the indicative scores?
As IELTS Indicator does not replace an in-person IELTS test at a test centre, it is not accepted by all organisations. We recommend that you check with your university or education provider before you book.
When will the result be released?
You will receive your results within 7 days of completing all sections of the test.
Will I get a score for each section along with an overall score?
You will receive an indicative score for each section along with an overall indicative score. Indicative scores will help you know how you performed and where you need to improve.
Who will mark the IELTS Indicator test?
Like in the IELTS Academic, responses are marked by trained and certified IELTS Examiners who strictly follow the IELTS marking criteria.
Will the test taker receive an overall score for each part of the test (Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking)?
Test takers will be given an indicative overall band score as well as a band score for each part of the IELTS Test.
Will score ranges for IELTS Indicator be the same as for the regular IELTS in-person test?
